Rangers-Penguins in Review

Before we get to the review, which has been graciously provided by E3, I just wanted to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving. Also, as Carp would say, if you’re drinking today, don’t even think about driving. Finally, as Chris Drury would say, I’m not going to let last night’s loss ruin my Thanksgiving.

And now, for the review:

Happy Thanksgiving everyone. This is perhaps my favorite holiday. For me and my wife, it gives us a chance to catch our breath as we gear up for the last two weeks of lecture leading into final exam week It is a quintessentially American holiday. And no doubt, as a nation, we need that unity. It’s about family, friends, food, spirits, sports, and relaxing. It’s about being thankful. This Thanksgiving, my in-laws are visiting, and as a Ranger fan, that is bad news. For one, I don’t think in the 20 plus years we’ve been together, our sexy boys have won a single game while they were visiting. This includes every playoff series ending game since 1995. For another, my morther-in-law has such a lovely habit of talking incessantly during the game that I pine to listen to Steingerwald and Errey, two of the biggest homers in all of sports broadcasting. Under normal circumstances, I’d rather shove a hot burning poker in my ears than listen to those two bozos. But really, I’m thankful for so many things. Really. Onto the game.

1) All things considered, how was the play Mrs. Lincoln? Ugh. When your team is in danger of having fewer shots on goal than the other team’s actual goals, you know it’s not a good night. “Oh E3” said my father-in-law, “the Penguins scored again.” A few minutes later, “Oh dear! They scored again!”. A few minutes later, when the Penguins feed was showing a replay of some of the Penguins 6 goals, my father-in-law, thinking it was live play, noted wryly, “I don’t think they’re going to come back from this.”

2) It started off well. Rangers took a 1-0 lead, five seconds into their first power play. Stepan won the draw cleanly, back to McD who shot into a crowd, and as the puck kicked off Kreider’s skate, Rick Nash was Johnny-on-the-spot, poking at it twice before lifting it over last year’s wonder-boy Matt Murray. Things were looking up.

3) That was the end of that. The first period was a tight checking affair, and while not the most interesting game, the play on the ice was more or less balanced. Henrik made several outstanding saves. I was hoping Raanta would start, because I felt he deserved it after an outstanding game on Monday night but Hank was solid. The Penguins outshot the Rangers 10-7, and had the better chances. But Henrik stood tall, and the Ranger’s escaped the first period with a 1-0 lead.

4) The first period featured Sid Crosby, one of the most feared pugilists since Petr Nedved, taking exception to what I felt was a clean check by McD on Cream Sherry. Bang Bang along the boards. Sherry was in the wrong place at the wrong time as McD laid a nasty hit on him. The refs saw it differently. Namely, a five minute major for boarding. Sid grabbed McD by the shoulders and tossed him to the ground like a rag doll. Without a doubt, one of the most embarrassing moments in McD career to date. Few punches were thrown, if any, and Sid was given 2 for roughing.

5) The Rangers killed the 3 minute penalty without much incident. I really like their PK. Ready to fly the zone, this Ranger team looks to score at the drop of a turnover.
This year, a quarter of the way in, the second period has been the Rangers’ best so far this season. I, as I’m sure you were as well, expected a big push in front of the somnolent crowd. I miss the raucous days of old. The Garden used to be lively place to see a game. Great energy. The players were able to feed off the crowd’s passion making it tough on the visiting team. Sadly, not so much in recent years.

6) Rangers had chances to increase their lead particularly Nash, who was stopped several times by Murray. Interesting situation in Penguin land. MAF and Murray are both #1 goalies. There is only one net to defend. One of them has to go. MAF has a big cap hit making him more difficult to move, but Murray is younger, better, and clearly the future.

7) The lead lasted two minutes and two seconds into the second period, as Phil Kessel wheeled to the right of Henrik, throwing a centering pass to Scott Wilson, who had snuck behind JT and VC. I’m not sure what they were doing, but it sure wasn’t being attentive to the play around them. Score tied 1-1.

8) Less than three minutes later, Crosby tipped a shot from Cole to make it 2-1. Hank had no chance. In fact thereafter, the Rangers had no chance. The Pens scored 5 second period goals, Hank was chased, and the Rangers’ thoughts seemed to be ‘come to fight and run away, live to fight another day’.

9) You can’t really blame Hank for any of the Pens’ goals except Kessel’s shot that was high glove side, short side, from the right dot. Bad luck? Perhaps, but it seems like Hank has been victim of a lot of bad luck going back to that storied run to the finals three years ago.

10) After two periods, the Rangers trailed 5-1 and were outshot 21-13. Worse was the fact that the Rangers went the last seven or so minutes of the second failing to register a shot on goal.

11) Bracing myself for a loss, I thought if the Rangers came out hard in the third scoring a couple of quick goals, we’d have ourselves a game.

12) And was I ever surprised. Not only did the Rangers not score quickly, they went about 22 minutes between their 13th SOG and their 14th. Oh well, ring the bell.

13) Poor effort across the board. why didn’t anyone get up in Crosby’s grill after tossing McD to the ice? Rangers had back to back PPs with the score 2-1 and didn’t establish much zone time set up and never threatened to score. Different game had they tied it at 2? Perhaps, but I doubt it.

14) It was so bad late in the second that the Pens controlled the puck in the Ranger’s end for almost two minutes and about three line changes before scoring making it 5-1. As Raanta pulled the puck out of the net, he was the first Ranger to have touched it in that span. Incredibly weak effort.

14) Much blame to go around. Shay had a horrible game and his failure to clear a puck in the second directly led to a Pens’ goal. No forecheck. No sustained pressure. no crisp breakouts, no zone time, not much of a physical presence, no effort. Next game. Let’s hope.

15) Rick Nash is having an excellent season. [Editor’s Note: Daily Nash-O-Meter: excellent] He certainly isn’t relied upon like in past years to be “The Man” and I think that fact has helped him to relax and as a result he’s playing big time hockey.

16) What to do with Hank and Raanta? There is little doubt that Hank is #1, but the team plays much better with Raanta in net. Tonight would have made little difference, but who starts next game?

17) I’m confident that this minor hiccup will be fixed. However, Zbad and Boosh are integral players on this team and while injuries are part of the game, these two new faces are what has helped turn this year’s team INTO this year’s team.

18) Calling Derek Stepan. Hello is anyone home? Second highest paid forward is not playing up to his cap hit. He needs to be better. He needs to score goals other than empty netters.

19) Calling Jimmy VC. Hello is anyone home? Such a great start. But he is only a rookie. Playing more games in a shorter time frame than at Harvard, for sure, but he’s young and full of energy and he has a high hockey IQ. He needs to keep attacking the net and not back down. No doubt that he’s the real deal and hopefully he’ll have a long prosperous career as a Blueshirt.

20) At least Girardi is playing better than last year. McD is playing better too. I like Holden’s game. Staal has been good. Shay is young and getting better. So, there’s that. We cannot expect 5 goals a game every game. But we should expect a better effort at home against a bitter rival and defending Stanley Cup champions. What a difference two days makes.

21) It’s on to Philly and let’s win there. Remember its a 1pm start for all my East coast bruthas and sistas.

My Three Ranger stars:

1) Nash
2) McD
3) Piree [Editor’s note: really?]

RR2’s Three Rangers stars:

1) Rick Nash
2) Michael Grabner
3) Derek Stepan

Your Three Rangers stars:

1) Rick Nash
2) Michael Grabner
3) Annti Raanta

  1. First? Happy Thanksgiving Boneheads collectively the best blog in the USA! To bad we must enjoy this great day after last night’s embarrassment. By the way nice write up E3 my coffee taste better while reading a well written review! Hank may be #1 but Antti needs to start more he will just keep getting better with more time in the net. I’m glad I didn’t get to see the game I’m sure I would have broke something of value in the house. Peace out everyone!

  2. Good morning, boneheads!
    Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!
Nice review, Eddie! Of a horrific lose. And it’s not the score, it’s how they lost. Im never too concerned about any loss, but this one is worrisome to me. It has everything to do with McD-Crosby debacle. Crosby’s calculated ( he knew McD wouldn’t do anything, it’s just not him. Why it isn’t him is for another discussion) response to a questionable hit changed the game. He knew exactly what he was doing. Your captain just got embarrassed, and your team does nothing? Is that on AV? Or is it the team? What, they’re worried about losing 2 points during the first quarter of the season? If I were Sullivan I’d use that in order to rile them up during first intermission telling my troops their opponent has no backbone. I think he did. If I were AV I’d ripping my team for not clearing the bench. I doubt he did that.
Fixable? I hope so. You can’t win the Cup without having a team that can stick together. Speed and skill will not be enough. Even in modern hockey.

Thanks for yet anutha great review, E3. I like that your In-laws call you E3 also.

Thanks for keeping the torch lit, Doodie.

Burn the tape of that one and go make some orange crush in Friday.

    Best to you all !

  5. Thanks, Simon. I think Doodie posted it last night. Not fully surprised. I guess the wording of his contract didn’t get into CapFriendly and other salary cap related websites. He waived his NMC to to come to NY, but I’m sure part of it was an understanding that his NMC would continue throughout his contract.
All this means is that they’ll have to expose Grabner, Fast, Lindberg etc.

  6. Doodie – re: my third star, 🙂 too funny. Honestly, I sat there for at least 10 minutes wondering who to write. I went through each player on the roster and had a real tough time deciding who should get the coveted award. I actually typed Nash – giving him the first and third star. Heck, I wasn’t exactly enamored with McD as second star either. So, I did an eeny meany miny mo kind of thing and picked #73.

  7. This is why nobody watches this sport. You goons told me how awesome this team is and how luncust is a great player. FIRST off he stinks. He’s garbage. Second, he’s overpaid. Third, you guys know nothing about this sport. You guys need to toughen up and watch football.

  8. E3 – great job trying to make sense of that spineless game. Must give thanks and praise on this day of giving. Jah Rastafari.
    .
Sounds like the team was reading too many press clippings on their start and forgot to move their feet. The D had their worst game of the season. The book is out. Dump it in and let the D play it out.
    .
Staalled in particular had a horrendous game. He cannot make a successful pass out of the zone
    .
Holden on the Skid deflection forgot he wasn’t a Dman and tried to play goalie. Horrible.
    .
Pirriwrinkle had an awful game. He is not a C. Miller needs to slot in. No surprise VC and JT had nothing going in Ozone with Pirri as pivot. He couldn’t move puck through neutral zone. Worse in Dzone.
    .
McD has to stand up for himself. This wasn’t Wayne Simmonds, this was someone who most would pay extra to get a couple of shots to the fat lipped caterpillar on his face. Embarrassing.
    .
Nash is a solid 2 way player but no sniper. He has fallen into the Bucky Richards game of no bad shot no matter the angle.
    .
Grabber is the only one who can claim he earned his paycheck last night.

  11. Great summation, E3! Gutless effort from our boys. Never thought I’d see the day when Slats iced a Ranger team with Capuchin Monks and no armed guard at the door, but it has become what it has become. Gorton and AV. The new Manhattan age of pretty-boy hockey. To have your Captain, of all people, made a fool of is pathetic. And no credit to Donuts, either, who is showing himself to be an easy touch even in self-defense.

And , unlike some others, I’m not sold on Girardi, Staal, and etc. Happy Thanksgiving!

  12. Let us all be thankful this Thanksgiving that the NYR delivered the turkey a day early. Can you imagine watching that tire fire today? Thanks as always for the review and you did identify the culprit that broke open the dam on that failed clear early in the 2nd. Skjei was bound to have a down game, just baffling that the rest of the team would go down with him. AV’s early season line magic ran out last night as well and agreed on DS not playing up to his contract.

  13. Ricardo – I’m not seeing the last 4 games, especially last night’s debacle, as a precursor to what we saw last year. Larry Brooks’ article today points out the clear differences. But it is concerning how soft our sexy boys are playing. McD getting tossed down like a baby kitten, with no retaliation then or later in the game, is just wrong. It is. Having no Time and space is our boys kryptonite, and if they don’t get tougher along the boards, and in the corners, it won’t be a happy spring.

Moreover, what is going on with Hank? While the goals are clearly not all on him….Run Tuh is playing at a higher level right now. Your thoughts please…

  15. Eddie, they have people who can do it now. Besides, this isn’t Tony Twist we are talking about, it’s Sidney Crosby.
I don’t want to overthink it, but I hope it isn’t this team’s mentality and hoping it’s a coache’s mandate. If it is on AV, needs to be fixed. However, if it is this team’s mentality, I’m not convinced it’s fixable.

  16. Ilb – I know they have guys that can do it now. Certainly Klein, JT, and THE are more than capable. My point was Prust, Rupp, et al. wouldn’t have needed much of an invitation – And there WOULD have been hell to pay. Last night? Nary a naughty word much less a physical push back.

  17. And I think unless AV wears women’s panties, there’s no reason on earth for there to have been there in-house discipline for coming to the aid of our Captain. So you give the Pens a power play or two, who cares??? The Rangers were done on the scoreboard. At least win the gurney count.

  18. More than a hint of Blue Goggles on the McD-Crosby interaction (nothing wrong with that–it’s the fanatic in “fan”). But, c’mon, the retaliation had already happened. McD with a dirty hit, right on the numbers, driving Sheary’s face into the glass, and Crosby immediately backs up his teammate, who was lucky to be conscious. Sure, you can retaliate for the retaliation, and then retaliate for that, etc., right up to the line brawl. But it’s hardly a scandal that it ended with the rag-doll, two in the box, done.

    Like

  19. Ilb is correct. Now, I’d expect that McD is likely to be run all season long and his shoulder will be as exposed as the Rangers’ collective frail pushback.

  20. Anyone going near a Crosby or a Jah-Roo and watch how quickly a scrum + develops. It’s not good that our boys are so meek especially in a game that already lost.

    Like

  21. E3, that’s 100% Blue Goggles. Nothing remotely clean about shoving the numbers to drive an opponent’s face into the boards. I had the same wishful thought at first, that it was an unlucky hit, but all the replays confirmed it, and the ref’s arm went up instantly–not a tough call. Switch the jersey colors and there would be a bounty on the Pen’s defender.

  22. We are talking about the hit that Shreary got up and skated away from, not missing any time or shifts?
    .
Crosby has every right to jump McD, believe me he knew nobody would come to McD’s defense which is why he did it. he is nobody’s fool.
    .
The fools were the refs for not giving him 2-5-10 and the NYR wussies on the ice for not backing up their team mate starting with the $5M man Done Girardi.

  25. A dirty hit is a dirty hit, whether or not the player is injured. I remember back in the C&C days how that used to drive Carp nuts, the Department of Player Endangerment taking injury into consideration in its sentencing, as though some slew-footing Marchand under consideration had control over the outcome. Thanks, speaking of C&C, for the writeup!

  28. Great Job E3 but can’t agree about Girardi. He started the year well but seems to have regressed to last year’s form. We noticed at game last night that he loses virtually every puck battle. Also just shoves the puck up the right boards to the opposing team regularly. Not good.

  29. Orlando – agreed re: #5 last night. But then, aside from Nash, the whole team sucked eggs. I thought this year Girardi started terribly and slowly rebounded into better form. Time will tell if he is really Done. Personally, I’m saddened that The Wrath was let go. I think by next year he easily could play a 5/6 role.

This third-rate, cut-rate, mailed-in, paper-tiger-of-a-squad is as bush league and Mickey Mouse as they come. As we speak, I’m looking underneath for couch-change Puempels who can’t cut the ketchup, much less the mustard. I expect nothing less than a 10-0 Flyers victory over the mediocre-central, faded-watercolor, lemon-stand NYRangers.
